Immigration Enforcement - Arrogance, Hypocrisy & Stupidity

The Obama Administration has it all !

Sessions Responds to ICE Chief Remarks on Arizona Law [Daniel Foster]

The other day I passed along the news that John Morton, the nation's top immigration cop, told the Chicago Tribune the federal government would "not necessarily" enforce the Arizona immigration law by processing illegals arrested via it.

Appearing on Fox News today, Sen. Jeff Sessions (R., Ala.) rebuked Morton and said that the failure to enforce the law would amont to “not fulfilling the responsibilities of his office.”

That Ain't Hay, It's The USA [Mark Steyn]

Kate McMillan has an interesting juxtaposition:

A top Department of Homeland Security official reportedly said his agency will not necessarily process illegal immigrants referred to them by Arizona authorities.

That would be John Morton, assistant secretary of homeland security for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. As he sees it:

The law, which criminalizes being in the state illegally and requires authorities to check suspects for immigration status, is not “good government,” Morton said.

I gave a speech for the Goldwater Institute in Tucson a few weeks back, and several people came up from the border to see me. Like many letter writers I've heard from since, they told tales of living in remote properties where every night illegals cross their land. They lie awake at night frightened for their children and listening for footsteps in the yard.

In effect, the sovereignty of the United States of America no longer applies in this territory - and John Morton and the Department of Homeland Security are entirely cool with that.

On the other hand:

FRANKLIN, Vt. — This is one sleepy border crossing.

At the Morses Line Port of Entry, on the U.S.-Canada border, the border station is located smack-dab in the middle of a Vermont dairy farm.

On average, 2 1/2 cars pass through an hour. The pace is so slow that U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents who man it have been known to fill out their days by driving golf balls in an adjoining meadow, shooting skeet or washing their cars.

As (I'd wager) the only National Reviewer ever to use the Franklin crossing, I would say that's a fair description. But that was until the stimulus came along!

The government, which got $420 million from the federal bailout to modernize land ports like this, wants to spend about $7 million to build an expanded station. To do it, the government says, it needs an adjoining 4.9-acre parcel now used to grow hay and corn.

Owners of the Rainville dairy farm were told last week that if they won't sell the hayfield for $39,500, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will use eminent domain to seize it.
"The arrogance of it is breathtaking," said Brian Rainville, 37, whose parents and two brothers run the 220-acre farm and milk 80 cows on it. "Why are we being asked to make that kind of sacrifice when they can't demonstrate a public need?"

The public need is national security, according to Customs and Border Protection... "Our airports, seaports, and land ports of entry are all part of an interconnected security network to facilitate entry and exit to and from our country," the agency said in a statement Tuesday. "When we fail to fortify one, we weaken the entire system, putting our national security at risk."
So what? On the southern border your national security is "at risk" as a matter of policy. Why can't a Vermont dairy farm get the same deal?

(PS Bonus points if you spotted that the title of this post comes from the 1941 Republic Picture Sis Hopkins, in honor of the impending centenary of the great Frank Loesser.)

Obama Bash Drive By Thursday Post

What is the CIC up to these days:

Daniel Pearl: Obama Disrespects Daniel Pearl in idiotic comments.

http://biggovernment.com/jhoft/2010/05/18/word-to-obama-daniel-pearl-was-not-beheaded-because-he-was-a-journalist-he-was-beheaded-because-he-was-an-american-and-a-jew/

"And obviously the loss of Daniel Pearl was one of those moments that captured the world’s imagination because it reminded us of how valuable a free press is, and it reminded us that there are those who would go to any length in order to silence journalists around the world. What this act does is it sends a strong message from the United States government and from the State Department that we are paying attention to how other governments are operating when it comes to the press. "

Obama fetes Mexican Prez Calderon; let's Calderon trash Arizona's effort to combat illegal immigration and joins in the bashing; Obama admin gives Calderon standing O in Congress including Biden, Holder, Napolitano and all Dems. Disgusting.

Here's what O said today:

President Obama and Mexican President Felipe Calderon joined hands Wednesday in blasting Arizona's controversial immigration law, with Obama calling the legislation a "misdirected effort" after Calderon slammed it as discriminatory.

Obama, speaking next to Calderon during Wednesday's state visit, called the tough immigration law a "misdirected expression of frustration over our broken immigration system."

"We're examining any implications especially for civil rights because in the United States of America, no law abiding person -- be they an American citizen, illegal immigrant, or a visitor or tourist from Mexico -- should ever be subject to suspicion simply because of what they look like."

Meanwhile, Iran continues to run amok over Obama's failed outreach and toothless sanctions efforts; and North Korea beats the war drums after South Korea finally admits that the North did indeed torpedo the SK submarine in an act of war.

What else ?

Well, the stock market is crashing; Europe imploding; jobs losses are still increasing; the beat just goes on.

Hope and Change, baby !

Woody Allen: Let Obama Be Dictator !

Spoken like a true Kool Aid drinker:

Woody Allen has a strange take on the democracy that allowed him to become rich and famous.

The "Scoop" director said it would be a cool idea for President Barack Obama to be dictator for for a few years.

Why?

So he could get things done without all the hassle of opposing views getting in the way.

In an interview published by Spanish language newspaper La Vanguardia (that we translated), Allen says “I am pleased with Obama. I think he’s brilliant. The Republican Party should get out of his way and stop trying to hurt him.”

But wait - there's more!

The director said "it would be good…if he could be a dictator for a few years because he could do a lot of good things quickly."

Somewhere, Thomas Friedman is smiling ....
